THE PERFECT HIGH PRIEST FOR IMPERFECT PEOPLE
HEBREWS 5
With the perfect High Priest at our side, we may journey toward maturity in our spiritual lives.
The Perfect High Priest–Hebrews 5:1-10
Jesus is the Perfect High Priest who supersedes the Levitical Priesthood because he is far superior to their work and capabilities. They were of the tribe of Levi: Christ was of the tribe of Judah. They were many: He was one. They offered animal sacrifices: He offered Himself. They died: He lives.
Chosen by God–5:1-4
He is appointed by God to intercede for mankind–5:1 (2 Cor. 5:21).
He is gentle with mankind, since He shared their experiences–5:2 (Phil. 2:5-11).
He is obligated to offer sacrifices–5:3 (1 Cor. 15:3; Heb. 7:17).
He is exalted by God Himself–5:4-7 (Numb. 16:40).
Compassionate to man–5:8-10
He suffered with the people–5:9 (Heb. 2:10).
He has authority by virtue of his position as the High Priest and King of the royal priesthood–5:10 (Ps. 110:1-4; Gen. 14:17-24; Rev. 1:6).
APPLICATION
Do not be discouraged by struggles–Romans 8:1, 31-39.

The Imperfect People–Hebrews 5:11-14
Do not become spiritually lazy–5:11 (2 Tim. 2:15).
Spiritual laziness forfeits spiritual greatness–5:12 (1 Cor. 3:1-4; Eph. 1:3, 22-23).
Do not be satisfied with continued immaturity–5:13 (1 Pet. 2:2).
Grow to enjoy and examine the great blessings of God–5:14 (1 Kings 3:9; Eph. 4:11-16).
APPLICATION
