Send me. When the Lord’s work is to be done, send me. When the Gospel can be preached, send me. Isaiah heard The Lord say, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”. He replied, “Here am I, send me.”

When The Lord needs workers, we can’t sit idle. Everyone who has sat idle on the roadside with a car that wouldn’t move understands the importance of reliability and service. We need to be dependable in the Lord’s service and at the Lord’s worship services. The beloved story of David and Goliath begins with a backdrop of Israeli soldiers who are present but are sitting idle. While they sat the enemy blasphemed the God of Heaven and ridiculed his people.

Can’t we just hear the Devil himself saying, “I defy the ranks of the church this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together” (1 Samuel 17:10). We hear that defiant call every time we see iniquity marching unimpeded and overcoming congregations, homes, children, and the entire culture. The Lord needs brave men and women who are willing to take a stand with the sword of the Spirit.

When The Lord needs workers, we must go. David was brought to Saul and said, “Your servant will go” (1 Samuel 17:32). Isaiah said, “Here am I, send me.” The apostles said, “We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20).

Although there was a giant in opposition to David, he was six cubits and a span, the victory was certain because of David’s conviction in God’s power. David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine” (1 Samuel 17:37).

We too see great opposition to Godliness around us, but we should be overwhelmed with the greatness of the gospel rather than the wickedness of the world (Romans 1:14-17). David took with him 5 smooth stones, yet he only needed one to finish the job. The Lord sends his people out with the glorious gospel of Christ, and it is more than powerful enough to “convict the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment” (John 16:8).

It is time to go. If we sing, “Soldiers of Christ Arise”, then we must go into the vineyard as his workers. The beloved song by that title has a little known verse which says, “From strength to strength go on, wrestle and fight and pray, Tread all the powers of darkness down and win the well fought day. Still let the Spirit cry in all His soldiers, “Come!” Till Christ the Lord descends from high and takes the conquerors home.”

Prayerfully consider this question, “What can I do for Jesus today?”
