He Exists

“Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whosoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists, and that he rewards those who diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV). God is. Most of us probably take that fact for granted, but have we ever really examined the evidence. If the unexamined life is not worth living, then surely the unexamined faith is not worth having. Let us examine some of the evidence for God’s existence.

God must exist because the universe exists. This is often called the cosmological argument for the existence of God. We know that if something exists, it must have come from something. There must be that “first cause” if there is ever to be anything. Hebrews 3:4 tells us, “For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all thing is God.” Since we are here on planet earth which is a part of the universe, then we know that someone had to cause all this.

God must exist because there is evidence of design in the universe. The wonderful details of the universe are to great to be the result of an accident. Paul recognized this and said, “He did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14:17). The next time you get on your smart phone, try to imagine that it just happened. Could the iPhone be the result of an accident? We know that smart phones are the result of intelligent design because of its functionality, abilities, and intricate inner workings. Could we say that the universe, which is greater than an iPhone in every respect, is an accident when we see its fascinating design, abilities, and functionality? The universe demonstrates that is has an intelligent designer behind it.

God must exist because there are objective moral standards. Everyone acknowledges that somethings are wrong. Even when we are young we say, “that’s not fair.” We know that there is something inherently wrong with harming a child and that there is something inherently right in a mother’s love for her children. How can we explain the objective moral standards that transcend time and place? The presence of moral standards which are above any provincial or transient rule demands a moral lawgiver. Jesus asked, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone” (Matthew 10:18).

God must exist because the Bible has characteristics which are beyond human production. When we study the Bible we see evidences for God’s existence. The Old Testament prophecies that have been fulfilled in the person, work, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth are beyond the capabilities of mankind. Only God could declare what the future would hold for the Messiah hundreds of years before the events. Only God could providentially cause all those things to come to pass. Only God could foresee the death burial and resurrection of Christ, and only God could raise a body from the grave to have him die no more.

God is, and he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. The most plausible explanation for all the evidence that surrounds s is that there is a God. He loves you. He sent Jesus to die because of your sins. He raised Jesus from the gave to give you hope. He gave you the Bible so that you can know how to live with Him. He invites you share his Heaven.
