O that the grace of God would fill in the hearts of mankind and flow into all our words and a actions! David is described as “a man after God’s own heart.” That description is seen no better than in his display of loyalty and kindness to Mephibosheth.
Mephibosheth was the victim of time and circumstance. He was became crippled when the news of his father (Jonathan) and grandfather (Saul) had been killed and his nurse picked him to escape only to fall with him (2 Samuel 4:4). From that point forward he was crippled in both feet. We can only imagine how Mephibosheth must have longed for the life that would have been his as a prince of Israel, healthy, and blessed in all his circumstances. Instead, he must have spent many many days longing for what could have been.
David’s display of loyalty Saul and his family culminates in 2 Samuel 9:1 when David asks, “Is there yet anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”. When David learns of Mephibosheth, the crippled young man’s position in the palace and among the people. David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly” (2 Samuel 9:7).

SOME LIFE APPLICATIONS:
–God initiated the Covenant relationship, so we should initiate mercy with others. He is the Creator, He is the Savior, He is the Mediator, He is the atoning sacrifice–Acts 2: John 8:28, “Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.”
–God shows us mercy every day, we must be merciful to others every day–Matthew 6:14-15.
–God is merciful to those who need it most, and we should be grateful that he is merciful to us–1 Timothy 1:15.
–God said David was a man after his own heart. If we are going to be people who are of the heart of God, we must be holy and merciful–Matthew 5-7.
