We have had some wild weather! Snow, ice, freezing temperatures, frigid wind, and a 60 degree forecast for this weekend. Our steps are currently covered in ice. Just yesterday we built a small snowman and made snow angles and ate some snow cream. The winter weather can be fun, but it is important to stay safe.

The bad weather reminds us of how important it is to be prepared and safe with God. We never know what the weather will be in Mississippi, but we always know how important it is to be safe in grace of Jesus. Jesus warned us that the day of judgment will come unexpectedly like a thief in the night. Still yet many of us want to see just how much of “the night” we can enjoy without really thinking of our souls and the eternal danger with which we are flirting.

Stay safe with God by staying in his Word. Traveling a dark icy road is no fun. If we must travel in dangerous road conditions, we should try it in the daytime with the light. God’s Word is the only safe light of the soul. David says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to keep your righteous rules.” Psalm 27:1 says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”. If we will be safe with God, it is only because we keep safely within the counsel of his Word.

Stay safe with God by staying in church. We know that the church is not the building. The church is the people of God. However, there is something blessed about coming together “in church” or as a church family. In I Cor. 11:18, Paul uses the phrase “in church” much like we use it today referring to the assembly of Christians. The same concept is used in Colossians 4:16, “in order that it be read in the church of the Laodiceans”. There was something blessed about being “in church” and there is still something blessed about being “in church.” Being “in church” is one of the primary indicators of spiritual health. Consistent absenteeism is a clear indication of some spiritual virus of the soul or some physical ailment. If we will be safely taken over to Heavenly shores, let us be safe now by being faithfully “in church”. Are you really in the church if you are not regularly “in church”?

Stay safe with God by staying in prayer. We are commanded to pray unceasingly (1 Thess. 5:17). This will keep us safe by having a constant communication of our fears, wants, desires, and hopes with the Father. Prayer will also keep us safe, by keeping us focused on God. It is incredibly difficult to sin while praying. I’m sure someone has done it, but it is difficult. In order to stay safe with God, be in constant communication with Him. It is too great a privilege to neglect.
