Grace has been defined as God’s riches at Christ’s expense. We should try to preach grace as often as you can, as much as you can, for as much of the glory of God as you can.

One of the beautiful pictures of grace in the Bible is the story of Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of King Saul. In 2 Samuel 4:4 when Saul and Jonathan had died, the nurse yanked up five year old Mephibosheth and fled. But on the way they fell and he became crippled from the injury. Five chapters later King David is looking to show kindness to the house of Saul for Jonathan’s sake.

Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson and Jonathan’s son, was found and summoned to the king. “And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, “Mephibosheth!” And he answered, “Behold, I am your servant.” ⁷ And David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul your father, and you shall eat at my table always.” (2 Sa 9:6–7).

Mephibosheth recognized this incredible offer. He wondered why. Why was he being blessed so much so undeservedly. He said, “And he paid homage and said, ‘What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I?’” (2 Sa 9:8).Instead of explaining why he was blessing him, David just reiterated just how blessed Mephibosheth would be. He said, ‘All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s grandson. ¹⁰ And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce, that your master’s grandson may have bread to eat. But Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall always eat at my table’” (2 Sa 9:9–10).

We love this story because it helps us to see and express our blessings of grace from God in Christ.

• We see the helpless cripple in our selves. We naturally understand the crippling nature of sin and how it affects us deeply.
• We see the King who wants to bless us for our Father’s sake. King Jesus arose from the Heavenly throne, and came to planet earth so that he could pull us up from the depths of sin into the glories of Heaven.
• We see the warmth of fellowship as Mephibosheth sat at the king’s table. We remember that we are blessed to sit at the table f the King of kings as we are blessed in Christ.

Paul wrote,

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, ⁴ even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love ⁵ he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, ⁶ to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. ⁷ In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight ⁹ making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ ¹⁰ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth” (Eph 1:3–10).

How wonderful it is to be blessed with the grace of God!

“Lord, thank you for loving us and being gracious toward us. Looking at your grace we acknowledge our sins, and we pray for help to abandon our sin. We thank you for passing over our sin so that we may pass into eternity with you.”
