Malachi records God’s question, “Will a man rob God, yet you have robbed me. How have you robbed me? In tithes and offerings you have robbed me.”

While Job was giving a defense of his righteousness, he declared that he had not put his trust in his great wealth but instead trusted in God.

Job 31:24-28, “If I have made gold my trust or called fine gold my confidence, if I have rejoiced because my wealth was abundant or because my hand had found much, if I have looked at the sun when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor, and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand, this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have been false to God above.

Job understood that he would have been denying God if he placed his trust in riches rather than in God.

Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Luke 16:13.

When will we learn to trust him? We can better learn to trust God by trusting ourselves less. This trust grows as we depend on ourselves less and upon Him more. Perhaps this is one blessing of giving appropriately to God. We learn to support the Kingdom as the King supports us in far greater ways.

Let us learn to confess God through living out our faith. What a great God we serve! How blessed we are to be his children. Let us not deny God by trusting in our own providence rather than his.
