With the selection and appointment of new deacons, we are reminded of the aspirations we should all have for ourselves in God’s Kingdom of servants. God said “those who serve well as deacons obtain for themselves a high standing and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 3:13).
This reward comes to servants. In Matthew 20:26 Jesus said, “whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” Again Jesus said, “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes” (Matthew 24:36).
Service has its own rewards. The joy of causing another to rejoice. The satisfaction of meeting another’s needs. But God blesses yet agai. As we are reminded that servants will have their rewards as well. To be a servant is to follow the footsteps of Jesus and to share in his Heavenly inheritance. What could be greater than that?
“Make me a servant, Lord make me like you.”
