Much of the drama in the world news is the result of competing and clashing worldviews. The secular worldview holds up the physical world as the foundation and end of all that is. This secular worldview can manifest itself in two ways. Either the physical world will be viewed as an “object” of supreme existence or the individual will be viewed as the supreme being. Secularism results in “happiness” and the good of the earth as ultimate goals. On the other hand, the Biblical worldview is based upon “the qualitative distinction between God and the world” (Michael Horton The Christian Faith, 77).

The competing worldviews are all based on claims of reality and the source of reality. The secularist bases existence on something physical–nature, the individual, or society. The Christian bases existence on God–the ultimate spiritual reality.

Colossians 1:15-20 helps us to see why we should base our worldview on God through his Son as we are taught through the Spirit. Paul wrote, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

God has taught us, in the Bible, that everything is by Jesus and for Jesus. If we are going to live by the Bible, then we must have the Biblical worldview which has Jesus at the center of life and the reason for life.
