What a blessing it is to be able to participate in the work of God. Every good and perfect gift comes from God–James 1:17. To give is part of God’s nature. Christians, we are to be givers just like God.
Galatians 6:10 says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith” (CSB). We want to share the good blessings of Christ we have received with others. We need not worry about exhausting our resources. Christians, we are simply funneling a flow of God’s inexhaustible riches with others.
The Spirit said, “God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. As it is written: He distributed freely; he gave to the poor; his righteousness endures forever. Now the one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will also provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us” (2 Corinthians 9:8-11). We give continually because we trust God will continually supply that which we can give and Godly love which causes us to want to give.
God is a giver. Christians are to be givers. Sometimes, the best thing we can give someone is the opportunity to serve themselves. You can see from 1 Timothy 5 that God forbade the continual giving of benevolence to a great number of groups. God is telling us that the best thing we can give these groups is the privilege of providing for themselves by God’s grace. “If a man will not work, then neither shall he eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10).
What a wonderful blessing it is to be a helper. What a privilege to be a servant utilized by God. Let us continue to worship our LORD. Let us continue to point people to him. Let us continue to help others by giving them the things they need most.
