Today, you may have heard, is Super Bowl Sunday. Last year the winners of the Super Bowl made $112,000 each—just for the Super Bowl. In 2018, the average American consumer spent more than $80 on the Super Bowl. Historically, 8% of Americans will buy a new TV for the Super Bowl. It is a big day.

Something bigger than the Super Bowl is happening today. You are going to worship. You are going to be with God’s people. You are going to be in the presence of God. Hebrews 2:11-12 teaches us that when we come to worship, Jesus worships with us. In Hebrews 2:11-12, the Bible teaches that Jesus is the one who was speaking in the quotation from Psalm 22:22 which says, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.”

Psalm 22 is incredible. It is the Psalm which prophecies Jesus’ words “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” in the first verse. The crucifixion of God’s Son is described here in Psalm 22 in greater detail than in any of the four Gospels. Still, in the midst of that horrible suffering, there are beautiful expressions of confidence and hope based on the love of our Triune God.

When the crucifixion is in view, it is even more remarkable that we see the words of verse 22, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.” Jesus looked Calvary in the face, took the cross on his back, and journeyed the Way of Sorrows so that he could praise God in the midst of the congregation. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Today, we get to join in that praise. It truly is a great day!
