With all the rain, you may have been thinking about Noah. You remember how God “saw that the wickedness of man was great upon the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5). Because of this the Bible says, “the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart” (Gen. 6:6). Perhaps all this rain should remind us of that day and call us back to holiness.

When God saw the overwhelming wickedness of ancient man, he brought the flood to destroy everything. God said, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold I will destroy them with the earth” (Gen. 6:13). As we see the floods are we not to be reminded of God’s judgment on sin?

We should also remember the rainbow. After the floods, God reminded Noah of his steadfast love. The love of God was displayed through the covenant and the rainbow which became the sign of the covenant. God said, “When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth” (Gen. 9:15-16). God loves us still.

I hope the rain reminds us all of God’s righteous judgment on sin and his everlasting love. Christians have the new covenant to remind them of both God’s love and God’s judgment. God promised this covenant in Jeremiah 31:31. God enacted this covenant in the death of his own Son and sinners are brought into this covenant as they are moved by faith in Christ to repent and be baptized into Christ (1 Pet. 3:21). This new covenant should be a constant reminder of God’s judgment on sin (placed on Christ instead of Christians) and God’s love for sinners (placed on us as we are in Christ).
