The Secular Coalition for America states that they exist “to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the United States and strengthen the secular character of our government.” They partner with several atheistic organizations to lobby for secular values in government in the US and abroad. They continue to advance their secular agenda today. On November 30th, they wrote, “Our partnership with the Congressional Freethought Caucus has allowed us to advance the secular agenda in ways once unimaginable. By coordinating with the Caucus and their staff, we have been able to fight back against the erosion of the wall that separates religion and government and elevate the discussion of our common secular values in Congress.”

Isn’t it important to stop and think about what secular values could be? Stop and think for a moment about what determines value. We place value on diamonds, but animals do not place exuberant value on diamonds. If we discovered a two-pound diamond on our property, we wouldn’t rest until we had brought it home. If a monkey ran across that same diamond, would it care? Every time we drive, we slaughter hundreds of bugs, and their corpses are in your grill every day. Why is that different than hitting a dog and that different still from hitting a person? Are these experiences based on purely social constructs or is there real value for people that isn’t’ attached to other things?

Since the incarnation of Christ, we can see and feel the soul’s worth. The Bible teaches us that Jesus, the Son of God, took on flesh and dwelt among us (Jn 1:14; Phil 2:5-11). Here we see two reasons why people have incredible worth. First, we see the value of humanity is real because there is a God in Heaven who created us in his own image to be his image-bearers on earth. Humans are created to be in a relationship with God. We have value. Furthermore, we see that humans have value because the Son of God added humanity to himself. Beyond the original dignity of God’s image-bearers, the true Image of God added humanity to himself and therefore sanctified humanity as its perfect representative. You are valuable because God exists and his Son lived as a human.
