How great is the Son of God? He is so great that he cannot be less than infinite transcendent glory. How great is God? Psalm 104 opened, “O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.” Paul wrote, “he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen” (1 Tim 6:15-16). The Son lives in light no one other than God can even approach (φῶς οἰκῶν ἀπρόσιτον,).
This glorious God cannot have his glory diminished. The divine nature, and therefore the divine persons, cannot change. The Scriptures affirm the unchangeableness (immutability) of God. 1 Samuel 15:29 says, “And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” Malachi 3:6 says“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” The Son of God cannot change his beautiful, perfect, and infinite glory. There is nothing and there is no one who could change the Son’s glorious perfection.
We are tempted to look at or even dwell upon ugly things in the world and in ourselves. Even those things which were made to be good are corrupted by Satan, sin, and ourselves. Why should we waste time in the ugliness of the world when we could have an eternal view of Christ? “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
